Abstract. The Internet of Things (IoT) -- the networked connection of objects than can 'talk' to each other and the Internet -- is poised for a 12- to 50-fold growth by 2020, driven by the incessant decrease in size, cost and energy consumption of wireless devices. Among its many benefits, the IoT could lead to the growth of "Smart Cities" whose quality of life would be facilitated by IoT-enabled applications for food production, water quality management and energy efficiency. But can ICT keep up with the demands of IoT, particularly in the face of mega-cities, urban sprawl, and the increasing frequency of extreme weather events? This is a central question of the 21st century.
