DESCRIPTION:\n Dynamical Systems and Ergodic Theory constitute a vibrant a
nd exciting field of current research in pure mathematics\, with lots of c
onnections to other areas such as probability theory\, differential geomet
ry\, ODEs\, and potential applications to such diverse areas as natural an
d biological sciences\, economics\, engineering\, climate and disease mode
ling and many others. It can be thought of as a modern development of clas
sical theories of Differential Equations and the fundamental concepts and
guiding ideas go back more than a century to pioneering thinkers such as P
oincaré\, Birkhoff and Kolmogorov. Its interest and importance has only g
rown in time and several Fields Medals have been awarded in the area.\n Th
e present Workshop is part of a long standing tradition of Dynamical Syste
ms and Ergodic Theory activities at ICTP that was initiated by J. Palis an
d C. Zeeman in the early 1980s\, and continued by Ya. Sinai\, J.-C. Yoccoz
and others.\n It will address a wide range of topics in this field\, incl
uding:\n • dynamics of one-dimensional maps\n • homoclin
ic and heteroclinic behavior\, fractal dimensions\n • partially h
yperbolic systems\, dominated splittings\n • singular hyperbolic
flows\n • conservative dynamics\, KAM theory\n • dynamic
s in homogeneous spaces\n • billiards\, interval exchanges\, Teic
hmüller flows\n • dynamics of rational and entire functions\n
• symbolic dynamics\, thermodynamic formalism\n • stochast
ic behavior of deterministic systems \n • Lyapunov exponents\,
nonuniform hyperbolicity\n The list of invited speakers reflects the diver
sity of these subjects. Their lectures will constitute the basis of the pr
ogramme\, but posters sessions are also planned\, which will give particip
ants an opportunity to present their works.Speakers:\n Artur AVILA\, IMPA
