		        SCHOOL ON ALGEBRAIC GEOMETRY
			  Miramare - Trieste, Italy
			  26 July - 13 August 1999

In conjunction with the mathematical theme of the year 1999 -
Differential Geometry and Algebraic Geometry - the Abdus Salam
International Centre for Theoretical Physics (ICTP) will organize a School on
Algebraic Geometry from 26 July to 13 August 1999. It will be directed by
L. Goettsche (ICTP), J. Le Potier (Universite' de Paris VII, France),
E.J.N. Looijenga (University of Utrecht, The Netherlands) and M.S.
Narasimhan (ICTP).

PROGRAMME

The first two weeks will be devoted to instructional lectures of an
expository nature. The topics to be covered include:

I. Geometric Langlands Programme

     1. E. Frenkel (Berkeley, U.S.A.): Geometric Aspects of Langlands
	 Programme.
     2. C. Sorger (Paris, France): Moduli of principal bundles on curves.

II. Moduli spaces of sheaves

     1. G. Ellingsrud (Oslo, Norway) & L. Goettsche (ICTP, Trieste, Italy):
Hilbert scheme of points and the Heisenberg algebra.
     2. L. Goettsche (ICTP, Trieste, Italy): Donaldson Invariants in
	 Algebraic Geometry.
     3. D. Huybrechts (Koeln, Germany) & M. Lehn (Goettingen, Germany):
Geometry of moduli spaces of sheaves.
     4. J. Morgan (Columbia, U.S.A.): Vector bundles on elliptic
	 fibrations.
     5. C. S. Seshadri (Chennai, India):
Degeneration of moduli spaces of vector bundles on curves.

III. Moduli spaces of curves and quantum cohomology

      1. R. Hain (Duke, U.S.A.):
Topological and Hodge theoretical aspects of moduli spaces of curves.
      2. Y. Ihara (Kyoto, Japan)*: Arithmetical aspects of moduli spaces of
	  curves.
      3. E. Looijenga (Utrecht, Netherlands): Introduction to moduli spaces
	  of curves.
      4. R. Pandharipande (Caltech, U.S.A.): Quantum Cohomology.

(*) In collaboration with M. Matsumoto (Kyoto, Japan) and H. Nakamura (Tokyo,
Japan).

These lectures are intended for young researchers and graduate
students in Algebraic Geometry as well as other mathematicians with a
background in Algebraic Geometry who wish to work in the above topics.

The third week will be devoted to a Conference, with lectures by experts
on the most recent developments in the field. The invited speakers for this
Conference include:

A. Beauville (ENS, Paris, France)	H. Nakajima (Kyoto, Japan)
J. Bryan (Tulane, USA) P. Newstead (Liverpool, U.K.)
B. Fantechi (Trento, Italy) S. Ramanan (TIFR, Mumbai, India)
K. O'Grady (Rome I, Italy) C. Voisin (Paris, France)
J. Li (Stanford, U.S.A.) K. Yoshioka (Kobe, Japan)

PARTICIPATION

Mathematicians from all countries that are members of the UN,
UNESCO or IAEA can attend the School. The main purpose of the ICTP is to
help research workers from developing countries through a programme of
training activities within a framework of international cooperation.
However, students and post-doctoral scientists from developed countries are
also welcome to attend. As the School will be conducted in English,
participants should have an adequate working knowledge of that language.
Participants should preferably have completed some years of study and
research after a first degree.

As a rule, all expenses of the participants should be borne by the
home institution. However, a limited number of financial grants are
available for participants from developing countries. As scarcity of funds
allows travel to be granted only in few exceptional cases, every effort
should be made by candidates to secure support for their fares (or at least
half of their fares) from their home country.

Graduate and doctoral students should include with their
application two letters of recommendation.

The closing date for submitting requests for participation is 15
February 1999. The decision of the organizers will be communicated to all
candidates as soon as possible thereafter.

The "Request for Participation" form, to be found appended to this
Bulletin (obtainable also via electronic mail: smr1158@ictp.trieste.it, using
as Subject: get announcement, or via WWW server:
http://www.ictp.trieste.it/www_users/math/maths1999.html) should be completed,
signed and mailed to:
