The Abdus Salam International Centre for Theoretical Physics (ICTP) is organizing a Workshop on Quantification of Earthquake Hazards in the Indo/Asian collision zone, to be held from 15 to 24 November 2012 in Kathmandu, Nepal. SUMMARY AND PURPOSE More than 50 million people are at risk in the Himalayan region from future earthquakes, and associated landslides and outburst floods. The population between Pakistan and Assam continues to rise and there is increasing need for informed engineering guidelines to aid local planning and construction in the vulnerable countries and increase their resilience against future earthquakes. The workshop will focus on quantifying collisional processes in the Himalaya and the consequent tectonics imposed on regions to their south in Pakistan, India and Bangladesh. The goals of the workshop are to build capacity in the theory and application of modern seismological and geodetic methods as well as facilitate new initiatives for cooperation in the Himalayan region and develop networks for exchange of ideas and expertise. The workshop will include invited lectures, panel discussions and training sessions in paleoseismology, seismology, GPS geodesy, InSAR, seismic hazard and risk. PARTICIPATION The workshop is open to researchers and students from all countries which are members of the United Nations, UNESCO, or IAEA. The principal objective of the ICTP is to help researchers from developing countries through a programme of training activities within a framework of international cooperation. Participants should have an adequate working knowledge of English. Due to budget limitations, every effort should be made by candidates to secure either total or partial support for their expenses. However, funds are available exclusively for a limited number of participants who are nationals of, and working in, Himalayan countries. Participants are required to take part in all aspects of this activity for its entire duration. There is no registration fee. REQUEST FOR PARTICIPATION The on-line application form can be accessed by clicking on the link application form below. Once in the website, comprehensive instructions will guide you step-by-step, on how to fill out and submit the application form.
