COST ACTION ES1005 TOSCA (www.tosca-cost.eu), the FP7 collaborative project SOLID (projects.pmodwrc.ch/solid), and the Abdus Salam International Centre for Theoretical Physics (ICTP), are organizing the 2nd TOSCA School on "Solar variability and climate response", to be held at ICTP, Trieste, Italy, from October 13 - 17, 2014.
The school is open to young scientists (PhD, young post-docs and 2nd year master students) and aims at providing them with a global understanding of the complex and controversial role of solar variability in climate change. Various topics will be covered, including the basic processes (solar, heliospheric, and atmospheric physics) with emphasis on the climate response, diagnostic techniques, errors and uncertainties, needed research, and socio-economic aspects.
he program will consist of three main modules, including lectures, guided discussions, and computer sessions. In addition, the students will be divided in small teams which will each develop a specific project related to the topics addressed by the school. Tutors will assist the working teams. The projects will be presented by the teams and discussed during the final day of the school.
The school is open to students from all countries. There is no registration fee. Limited funds are available to cover travel expenses for some participants, with priority given to those nationals of, and working in, a developing country, and who are not more than 32 years old. Participants will be accepted by the Organizing Committee mainly on the basis of their qualifications and the possible benefit to their research from attending the school.
