Mexico and Central America are vulnerable regions to extreme climatic events that causes socio-economical and natural disasters. Central America is a hot spot for climate change impact (Giorgi, 2006), being one of the most vulnerable regions in the world to climate change. Recent simulations performed with RegCM, contributing to the Coordinated Regional climate Downscaling Experiment (CORDEX) over Central America have shown that the use of regional climate models allows for a better representation of the local climate features and meso-scale phenomena, such as for example tropical cyclones compared with coarser resolution Global Models. Therefore, the main purpose of the workshop will be to provide extensive sessions focused on the implementation of techniques to carry out analysis of climate variability and climatic change in this area. The use of the regional climate model RegCM4 model will be shown as a tool to study climate-related phenomena at high resolution. This workshop will be organized with lectures and lab sessions which intend to provide a background on climate studies focused over Central America and Mexico, addressing issues like theory of regionaI climate dynamics and climatic change. One aim of the workshop is to start a community of users of Regional Climate Modeler focused over Mexico and Central America inline with the CORDEX framework. A limited number of participants is envisioned, with proven experience in handling climate data, and that have interest in starting to use the RegCM4 as a tool for regional climate studies.
