ICTP Physics Without Frontiers, in partnership with the Medical Physics Department, College Medical And Applied Sciences, Charmo University, is organizing a four-day nuclear medicine school to provide an environment of opportunity that will allow the students to learn and manage the well-rounded Nuclear Medicine of tomorrow successfully.

The school will be held from 20 to 23 November 2022 at Charmo University, Chamchamal, Iraq.

The school's goals are to obtain a general understanding of an operational radiopharmacy site, starting from radionuclides production up to synthesis, quality control, dose dispensing and clinical use of radiopharmaceuticals in nuclear medicine laboratories and to observe on-site cyclotron-PET operations.

The main target participants are undergraduate and graduate students. It is important that the participants are interested in learning or improving their knowledge and skills in Nuclear Medicine, which will greatly impact their research work. This school also gives opportunities to the students to discuss face-to-face with the experts and show them the opportunities for their future carrier.

Several topics will be part of the school:
learning about a cyclotron-PET facility's design and available equipment and tools in nuclear medicine facility;
responsibilities, training and the qualification of the personnel;
site-planning and operation of a cyclotron;
liquid and gas targets;
daily operational techniques for production and quality controls on PET radiopharmaceuticals (such as [18F]FDG, [11C]methionine, [11C]choline, etc.); radionuclide calibration;
general understanding of maintenance, calibration, cleaning of the equipment.

Particular attention will be paid to the role of Nuclear Medicine Physicists who are responsible for ensuring the correct operation and calibration of all equipment used in nuclear medicine facilities, such as the dose calibrator (to precisely measure the amount of radioactivity in a sample) or PET scanners. The knowledge and skills the Nuclear Medicine Physicists obtain during their studies and training equip them well to support the department to keep the sophisticated high-technology instruments running and educate them to attain a high quality of healthcare with the goal of medical service.
