The Workshop will combine a variety of highly interactive exercises, talks, panel discussions, training sessions and other activities designed to help women in physics share their experiences, gain self-confidence and acquire extra skills they need to become successful in their professions.
It is increasingly being recognized that the low number of women in physics, and the sometimes adverse working conditions that these women face, is a serious problem for the physics community as a whole. As a step towards addressing some of these issues, we have been conducting Career Development Workshops for Women in Physics at the ICTP. Two such workshops were conducted in 2013 and 2015. The overwhelmingly positive response to these workshops, and the fact that several women who applied were not able to participate in these earlier workshops due to either a lack of funds or space, has motivated us to hold a third such workshop in 2017. From the feedback received from participants, we know that the format we have developed works well and has been greatly appreciated. A new group of women scientists will be selected for this year’s workshop, with the aim of reaching the greatest range of participants possible.
