Abstract. Extensions of the Standard Model will be discussed in which the masses of the third-generation fermions arise at the tree level while those of the other two generations get induced at the loop level. After discussing the general framework which enables this, I shall discuss two explicit constructions based on abelian and non-abelian gauge symmetries.
