Abstract:
Extreme confinement may drastically affect the physical and chemical properties of water and its solutions. We will examine in this talk two fundamental problems related to this question. The first one is the equilibrium constant for water dissociation. Different studies have suggested it may change by orders of magnitude in confinement, either toward larger or lower values. The second problem deals with gas generation in aqueous electrochemistry. Bubble formation, common to many electrochemical transformations, has as a drawback the blockage of the electrodes and the drop of the currents. Nanoelectrodes have been regarded as way to bypass this limitation, but the experimental dependence of the current with respect to electrode size and potential remained ambiguous. In this talk we present results from molecular simulations at different scales that answer these questions.
