Complexity in the Geospace and not only: two short talks

- 14:00 - 14:45   Complexity of near-Earth space plasma dynamics

Giuseppe Consolini (INAF, Istituto di Astrofisica e Planetologia Spaziali, Roma, Italy)

Abstract: The near-Earth space, the terrestrial magnetosphere, is a highly dynamical plasma system as a consequence of the variability of interplanetary space conditions. Over the years different modeling of the dynamics of this system in response to changes in the conditions of the interplanetary medium and the solar wind have been proposed: from chaos to forced and/or self organized criticality. In this talk a review of the most relevant results of the dynamics of the Earth's magnetosphere in terms of a complex system near a critical point is presented.

- 14:45 - 15:30   One Thousand and One Dynamics - not that F = ma was not enough

Massimo Materassi (CNR-ISC, Istituto dei Sistemi Complessi, Florence, Italy)

Abstract: Complex Systems are composite systems whose properties are emergent effects of the interactions among the subsystems composing them. In this presentation, I would like to briefly present some formalism useful for complex dynamical system study.

Turbulent plasmas give the opportunity of introducing stochastic and fractal formalism, while Dissipative Systems are treated via metriplectic formalism. Last but not least, Trophic Webs, describing ecosystems, are an interesting meeting point for Biology, Conservation Laws and Network Theory.
