Abstract:
In the field of quantum magnetism, the term "frustration" refers to the existence of competing interactions between magnetic moments which can suppress ordering tendencies at low temperatures. In this scenario, quantum spin liquid phases can emerge, i.e. non-magnetic states of strongly fluctuating spins that can exhibit unconventional properties as a consequence of large many-body entanglement. Since the experimental detection of quantum spin liquids is hindered by the lack of a distinctive order parameter, numerical investigations of frustrated systems are important to assess the possible existence and stability of spin liquid phases, and to interpret their measurable features. In this talk, after an introduction to quantum spin liquids and their fundamental properties, we will discuss case studies of frustrated magnets with a kagome lattice structure, exploring their conventional and fractional excitations, and the possible effects of lattice distortions on the magnetic interactions.
