Abstract:
This talk reviews my journey that started with the academic studies of strong interactions, cold atoms, and high Tc superconductors. Driven by the compelling moral imperative of the climate crisis, I switched to the field of renewable energy. I articulate five bridges which academic researchers may take to make an impact for industry-relevant renewable energy projects with their academic techniques I report on three projects where my own work was directly used by companies for their product development. These were in the field of solar cells, permanent magnets for hybrid cars, and quantum computers. –- To have an impact in another way, I created a parallel life in patent law, where I specialize in developing and protecting the intellectual property of startup enterprises that invent new generations of eye surgical devices. -- The overall goal of the talk is to demonstrate some of the career choices available for young condensed matter physicists to impact our rapidly evolving world.
