The course on Applications of Group Theory in Physics will be held at Université Peleforo GON COULIBALY (UPGC) from December 02nd to 13th , 2024.
The participants are 50 students formally registered for the first year and the second year Master’s programme in Physics, 2024–2025, at the Department of Mathematics-Physics-Chemisty, UFR-SB, UPGC.
The duration of the activity is 24-h and is scheduled for the same period as other courses of the Master’s programme in Physics. It includes 08-h tutorial and discussion sessions and 02-h of a session about careers and opportunities in theoretical physics.
The main parts of the course include:
Historical introduction to the concept of group and an introduction to group theory in theoretical physics.
Generalities about representation theory.
List of groups used by physicists.
Crystallography.
Eigenvectors of an operator and irreducible representations of a group.
Wave functions and rotation group.
Irreducible representations of rotation groups and spin.
Two general theorems: Noether's theorem (1915) and Goldstone's theorem.
Tutorial and discussion sessions.
