Abstract
I will discuss the role that different energy scales play in our direct searches for dark matter. In particular, I will discuss how, lowering the masses one is interested in probing, it becomes mandatory to account for new degrees of freedom: those typically belonging to low energy physics. In this context, these degrees of freedom can be both a curse and a blessing. I will argue that effective field theories for spontaneously broken spacetime symmetries can be a crucial tool to tackle the problem.
