 ales play in our direct searches for dark matter. In particular\, I will d
 iscuss how\, lowering the masses one is interested in probing\, it becomes
  mandatory to account for new degrees of freedom: those typically belongin
 g to low energy physics. In this context\, these degrees of freedom can be
  both a curse and a blessing. I will argue that effective field theories f
 or spontaneously broken spacetime symmetries can be a crucial tool to tack
