Physics Without Frontiers and University of Sri Jayewardenepura present a Machine Learning Workshop: Applications in Physics and Material Science. This five-day training workshop is hosted at the Department of Physics, Faculty of Applied Sciences, University of Sri Jayewardenepura in Sri Lanka, in collaboration with the International Center for Theoretical Physics (ICTP). The program equips academics, postgraduate and undergraduate students with practical hands-on experience and theoretical insights into machine learning techniques for materials property prediction, data-driven discovery, and neural network applications in physics.
The program will cover the following topics:
-Basics of Machine Learning: Fundamental concepts and physics applications, including linear/non-linear regression models with DFT examples for bandgaps and formation energies.
-Classification and Clustering: Supervised/unsupervised techniques using DFT datasets for structure and phase classification
-Feature Engineering: Materials descriptors, PCA applications, and custom feature selection with tools like matminer-Feature Engineering
-Deep Learning Models: Neural networks for property prediction, model deployment
-Hands-on Implementation: Python data handling (NumPy, Pandas, scikit-learn), regression/classifiers on real datasets, and capstone projects.
-Advanced Integration: Data-driven discovery, interdisciplinary collaboration, and long-term research/curriculum development in ML-physics
