 .1\n\nAbstract: \nAlthough we often think of laser applications and the f
 ield of photonics\nas being related more closely to engineering than to ba
 sic science\, the\ndevelopment of the laser in fact traces a path that run
 s parallel to basic\nresearch in many areas of physics.  Indeed\, it is n
 ot often appreciated\nthat research into the science and applications of l
 ight in a broader\nsense has seen the award of more than thirty Nobel Priz
 es!  This talk\ndescribes some of the key historical contributions to our
  modern\nunderstanding of light and lasers\, particularly highlighting the
 \nbackground to key Nobel Prizes in these areas.  It will also discuss th
 e\nwider significance of the laser\, recognized by UNESCO through the\nInt
 ernational Day of Light on 16 May which marks the anniversary of the\nfirs
 t observation of laser operation in 1960.\n\nAll are welcome to join on Zo
