Abstract:
Understanding the new dynamical regimes realized by quantum simulators is an emerging challenge.
These digital quantum phases lack traditional order parameters such as magnetization or currents, and are defined instead by their non-classical behavior, or quantumness.
Entanglement has played, and continues to play, a key role in characterizing these regimes; but it is not the whole story.
I will discuss how magic, or non-stabilizerness, provides an equally important and complementary perspective.
I will develop a statistical-mechanics approach to the dynamics of magic in many-body systems, and comment on the impact of these results for current quantum devices.
I will show how entanglement and magic are two pieces of a larger puzzle of resource theories, still to be charted in the many-body landscape.
