DESCRIPTION:\nICTP Associates Seminars are part personal\, part scientific
 \, with speakers\nharing their career trajectory and experiences\, then in
 troducing their\nresearch field and work.\n\nIn this seminar\, Carolina Br
 ito from Federal University of Rio Grande do\nSul (UFRGS)\, Brazil\, will 
 discuss the challenges of building a scientific\ncareer in Brazil and work
  on complex systems in her group in Brazil.\n\nZoom link for registration:

 n the first part of this talk\, I will share some aspects of my life and\n
 career path\, including my experiences abroad and the challenges of\nbuild
 ing a scientific career in Brazil. I will also present outreach\ninitiativ
 es that have become an important part of my work\, including\nprojects aim
 ed at increasing the participation of women in science and\nproducing scie
 nce communication content for broad audiences. In the second\npart\, I wil
 l introduce several research topics pursued by my group\, all\nconnected b
 y the study of complex systems.I will briefly discuss wetting\nphenomena a
 nd their applications to water-oil separation\, active matter\nsystems und
 er environmental stress\, and a recent interdisciplinary effort\nto study 
 climate-related disasters\, motivated by the devastating floods\nthat affe
 cted southern Brazil in 2024.\n\nBio\n\nCarolina Brito is an Associate Pro
 fessor of Physics at the Federal\nUniversity of Rio Grande do Sul (UFRGS)\
 , Brazil\, and a CNPq Research\nFellow. She is currently a Regular Associa
 te of the ICTP. Her research\nfocuses on complex systems\, particularly we
 tting phenomena and extreme\nweather events and disasters. She is actively
  involved in science outreach\nand inclusion\, leading the program Meninas
  na Ciência to encourage women\nin STEM\, and co-hosts the podcast Fronte
