An ICTP Meeting
Tropical and extratropical Rossby waves connect atmospheric dynamics to compound weather and climate extremes. This workshop explores their mechanisms, predictability, future changes, and societal and ecosystem impacts.
Compound weather and climate extremes can have far-reaching societal and environmental impacts, including crop losses, water shortages, and risks to human and ecosystem health across multiple regions. Understanding how tropical and extratropical waves organise these events is essential to improve their prediction, representation in models, and assessment of their impacts. Building on the Bologna (2023) and Amsterdam (2026) meetings, this workshop will bring together atmospheric dynamics, statistics, and impact research to identify key knowledge gaps and future directions. Talks, posters, and focused discussions will address the mechanisms driving compound extremes and advance collaboration through shared tools and datasets. Embedded in the 8th Summer School on Theory, Mechanisms and Hierarchical Modelling of Climate Dynamics: Global Waves, Local Extremes, the workshop will connect current research with training.
Topics
To be considered, please submit a separate, parallel application for the "8th Summer School on Theory, Mechanisms and Hierarchical Modelling of Climate Dynamics: Global Waves, Local Extremes" Abstract submission: All applicants wishing to present a poster/talk must upload an abstract in the application form using the below available templates. Grants: A limited number of grants are available to support the attendance of selected participants, with priority given to participants from developing countries. There is no registration fee. |
