ICTP Associates Seminars are part personal, part scientific, with speakers sharing their career trajectory and experiences, then introducing their research field and work. In this seminar, Velimir Ilic, Regular ICTP Associate with QLS from Mathematical Institute of the Serbian Academy of Sciences and Arts (SANU), Serbia, will discuss information theory, statistical physics, classical thermodynamics, and black hole thermodynamics. Abstract: In the first part of the talk, I will give a brief overview of my scientific career. I will then discuss the concept of entropy and its various definitions as they arise in different scientific fields, including information theory, statistical physics, classical thermodynamics, and black hole thermodynamics. Biography: Velimir Ilić is Senior Research Associate at the Mathematical Institute of the Serbian Academy of Sciences and Arts, Serbia. He received his PhD degree at the Faculty of Sciences and Mathematics, University of Niš, Serbia in 2012, where he now serves as a lecturer. He was a postdoctoral researcher at University of Arizona, USA in 2014, and Technical University of Darmstadt, Germany in 2015. He has been appointed Regular Associate of the ICTP (QLS department) since 2022. He was a local organizer of two ICTP schools in Serbia (Niš School on Information, Noise and Physics of Life 2022 and 2024), the chair of the Joint European Thermodynamics Conference 2025 and organizer of several scientific events related to the physics of complex systems. He has been a core group member of two COST actions, and currently he serves as a Stakeholder Group leader of the COST action Testing Fundamental Physics with Seismology (FuSe).
