ABSTRACT:
The cohomology of an algebraic variety carries extra symmetries beyond what the underlying topological space sees. For smooth projective varieties, these symmetries are captured by the so-called Hodge decomposition. When you drop the assumptions of smoothness or projectivity, these symmetries break down in a controlled way, recorded by a notion of weight. In this talk, we will explore these symmetries in the concrete case of curves: elliptic curves where everything works perfectly, and singular or non-compact curves where the structure changes in measurable ways.
