ICTP Physics Without Frontiers (PWF), in collaboration with the National Nuclear Research Institute of the Ghana Atomic Energy Commission and the School of Nuclear and Allied Sciences, University of Ghana, will organise a one-week training workshop from 9 to 13 November 2026 at the Research Reactor Training Centre of the Ghana Atomic Energy Commission.
The workshop responds to a persistent challenge in higher education: many students are expected to undertake data-driven research but have limited opportunities to develop practical skills in statistical modelling, programming, and machine learning.
It will bring together 30 undergraduate and graduate students from physics, mathematics, engineering, computer science, and related disciplines for intensive training in R and Python. Topics will include research data management, open and responsible research, author carpentry, data preprocessing and visualisation, statistical modelling, feature engineering, model selection, and model evaluation.
Short lectures will be combined with guided coding sessions, practical assignments, real-world datasets, and participant mini-projects. A career and mentorship session, together with a guided tour of the Accelerator Research Centre, will broaden participants' exposure to academic and professional pathways.
By the end of the programme, participants are expected to analyse and interpret data more confidently, apply appropriate machine-learning methods, and communicate evidence-based findings clearly. The workshop will also strengthen interdisciplinary collaboration and help build sustainable local capacity in data science and machine learning. Women are strongly encouraged to apply.
