Abstract:
I will explain the physical motivations for studying quantum properties of black holes and their significance for our explorations of quantum gravity. After an introduction for non-specialists to some of the basic concepts in the physics of black holes, I will describe how the study of quantum black holes in string theory has led to some surprising connections with areas at the forefront of research in number theory, in particular, concerning modular forms of various kinds.
