Abstract:
The calculus of variations deals with a wide class of minimum problems. In the seminar some of the classical necessary and sufficient conditions for minimality will be presented, together with a selection of classical examples. The modern approach to the problem of the existence of minimizers will be discussed. A quick description of some recent applications to fracture mechanics will conclude the presentation.
