Abstract: Darwinian optimization -- walkers that randomly diffuse and reproduce proportionally to the quantity that has to be maximized -- may be mapped into ordinary thermal optimization (e.g. Monte Carlo) when applied to complex landscapes. We may thus see the limitations of the former clearly. More interestingly, we may apply what we know from annealing schemes to accelerating the dynamics of an evolving population.
