Abstract. I present computations of the exact quantum effective action in classes of matter Chern Simons theories in the t' Hooft large N limit, and use the results of this computation to analyze the stability and phase structure of various matter Chern Simons theories, including the so called 'regular boson theory' and the N=2 supersymmetric matter Chern Simons theory with a single fundamental chiral multiplet.
