Regional climate models (RCMs) are widely used tools to produce high resolution regional climate simulations, and the ICTP Earth System Physics section maintains the RegCM system, which is used by a wide scientific community. Currently, the most advanced version of the RegCM system is RegCM4, released in 2012, and incrementally augmented during the last 8 years. A new version of the model, however, is being developed, which will constitute the basis for the next RegCM version, RegCM5. In particular, RegCM5 will include a new non hydrostatic dynamical core, more accurate and much faster than the one available in RegCM4. In particular, this will allow the model to be more easily applied at convection-permitting resolutions (1-3 km). A Beta version of RegCM5 has been developed and the workshop will focus on the testing of this new version using different domains and resolutions. Differently from previous workshops of this series, this one will be shorter and more focused on lab sessions, although some theoretical lectures will still be presented. The workshop will thus be more directed towards expert users of the model, although some new users are also welcome.
