PWF Nigeria - Physics of Solute Transport in Porous Media – Theory to Modelling
Starts 14 Feb 2022 08:00
Ends 18 Feb 2022 18:00
Africa/Lagos
Researchers from Ladoke Akintola University of Technology (LAUTECH), Nigeria and The Hebrew University of Jerusalem (HUJI), Israel in collaboration with the International Center for Theoretical Physics (ICTP), Italy through the Physics Without Frontiers (PWF) program organised a workshop at LAUTECH, Nigeria to teach Physics of Solute Transport, from theory to modelling.
The workshop encompassed the description of governing equations like Pouiselle’s, Darcy’s and Richard’s used to describe flow of water under saturated and unsaturated conditions. The practical applications of the equations to various scenarios peculiar to agricultural production would be discussed.
Additionally, MATLAB programming was taught as well as the use of Hydrus 1D for simulation of flow in porous media. Furthermore, two break-through curve experiments were carried out and the results analysed using CXTFIT software to derive soil transport parameters. Class exercises was regularly given throughout the workshop.
About 70 participants registered for the workshop with participants coming from physics, engineering, and agricultural backgrounds. Qualifications of participants ranges from PhD to BSc and gender equally distributed amongst participants. The workshop was concluded with presentations of the experimental results by the students and a review of selected reading materials. Finally, participants gave their review about the whole workshop.
