GRADUATION CEREMONY: 2021-2022 Postgraduate Diploma Programme

The 2021-2022 Postgraduate Diploma Programme Graduation Ceremony takes place on Friday 26 August 2022 @ 15.00 hrs in ICTP's Budinich Lecture Hall.
The Postgraduate Diploma Programme started in 1991, and since then, many of its graduates have gone on to do PhDs at various prestigious universities, including in Europe and North America. Many of them, after a few postdoctoral stints abroad, have returned to their home countries, where they are actively involved in teaching and in developing advanced research groups there. Others have pursued scientific careers in leading scientific institutions worldwide. Many former students continue to maintain an active collaboration with ICTP throughout their careers.
The programme of the ceremony is as follows:
15.00 - 15:45: Keynote talk by 2018 Dirac Medallist, Prof. Dam Thanh Son* on "Particles and quasiparticles: between particle and condensed matter physics".
Abstract: Elementary particle physics and condensed matter physics are two subfields of physics that have distinct goals. However, the theoretical concepts and methods used in the two fields sometimes show striking similarities, which in many cases allows one field to benefit from the insights developed in the other. I will describe a few examples, some of which are drawn from my own research.
15.45 - 16.30 Postgraduate Diploma Graduation Ceremony and awarding of certificates to Diploma Students
The events will also be livestreamed via the ICTP website as well as on ICTP's YouTube account.
After the events, light refreshments will be served on the terrace of the Leonardo Building, ICTP.

* Prof. Dam Thanh Son was born in Hanoi, Vietnam in 1969. He graduated from Moscow State University in 1991 and received his PhD in physics in 1995 from the Institute for Nuclear Research in Moscow, Russia. He subsequently held postdoctoral appointments at the University of Washington and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and faculty appointments at Columbia University and the University of Washington. In 2012 he moves to the University of Chicago where he is now a University Professor in the Department of Physics. He is a member of the U.S. National Academy of Sciences and the American Academy of Arts and Sciences.
