Application deadline: 15 October 2000

Open to African Scientists

The Abdus Salam International Centre for Theoretical Physics (ICTP) is co-sponsoring a regional climate modeling workshop to be held in Cape Town, South Africa. Co-sponsors include the International Institute for Theoretical and Applied Physics (IITAP). The workshop has the endorsement of the South African Society for Atmospheric Sciences (SASAS).

The Organizers of the Workshop are B. Hewitson (University of Cape Town, South Africa), W. Gutowski (IITAP, USA), F. Giorgi (ICTP, Italy), and A. Adedoyin (University of Botswana). Additional input will be provided by the NCAR MM5 training team and the IRI.

Outline and objectives

The workshop will run over two weeks and consist of two components: tutorial lectures on climate models, their structure, and implementation principles, interleaved with hands-on sessions with the MM5 regional climate model. During the course students will complete a modeling project. Specific objectives are to:

Participation

The workshop is planned for around 15-20 participants, selected from scientists and graduate students, with priority to those resident in the southern and eastern Africa nations. In particular, those with a strong interest in developing model-based research for southern Africa, within a collaborative framework to address common climate issues, should consider attending the workshop.

Suitable mathematical and computational background is necessary, with some experience in atmospheric science preferred, but not required. Applicants should ideally hold a Ph.D. in Atmospheric Science (however, currently registered Ph.D. students will also be considered) or in a closely related discipline (e.g., Physics, Applied Mathematics, etc.) and should be active in research. In addition, applicants should have access to a high-end PC(s) at their home institution on which to run the MM5 regional model in order to undertake follow-on model-based research after the workshop. The follow-on activity is considered essential to the success of the workshop. Thus, demonstrable institutional support to allow continued activity in this area after the workshop is important. Selection will be based on applicants background and interests, as well as to include geographic representation from across the regions.

It will be possible to fund a number of the participants. Additional places will be available with partial funding, or on own support, depending on demand and budget.

NOTE: All workshop activities will be conducted in english.
