The Abdus Salam International Centre for Theoretical
Physics (ICTP) and the Instituto Nazionale per la Fisica della
Materia (INFM) will jointly organise the School & Workshop
on "Spectroscopic Investigation of the Collective Dynamics
in Disordered Systems ", to be held in Trieste from 17 to
28 June 2002.
The activity will be directed by:
The aim of the activity is to present a state-of-the-art of the existing experimental techniques useful to study the collective dynamics in disordered systems, to give an overview of the specific problems faced with the different techniques and to summarize the open issues in the field.
The activity will consist of a 5-day working week with morning and afternoon lectures and seminars, including recent technical development and the state-of-the-art in the scattering spectroscopies commonly used to study collective excitations in disordered system: light scattering spectroscopies (time-resolved spectroscopies, extension to UV, ultra-fast correlation spectroscopy), neutron scattering spectroscopies (TOF spectroscopies, triple axis instruments, spin echo technique), and X-ray scattering spectroscopies (inelastic X-ray scattering and nuclear resonance spectroscopy). Lectures and seminars will deal with the spectroscopic investigation of the collective dynamics in different disordered systems, such as: colloids, simple monatomic liquids, quantum fluids, liquid metals, molecular liquids, hydrogen bonded liquids, glass forming systems, undercooled liquids, glasses and materials of biological interest. The spectroscopic studies of off-equilibrium dynamics, i.e. aging and related processes in disordered materials, will also be presented.
Students and young scientists from all countries
that are members of the UN, UNESCO or IAEA can attend the activity.
The main purpose of the Centre is to help researchers from developing
countries through a programme of training activities within a
framework of international co-operation. However, scientists
from developed countries are also strongly encouraged to apply.
This activity is specially meant for strongly motivated graduate
students and young post-doctoral scientists. For Schools, the
age limit for particpation is 45 years old.
Limited funds are available for some applicants from developing
countries, to be selected by the organizers. Every effort should
be made by candidates to secure support for their fare (or at
least half-fare) from their home country. Such financial support
is available only to those attending the entire activity. There
is no registration fee to attend the activity.
Candidates should complete and return the "Request for Participation"
form, to be found at the back of the Bulletin (also obtainable
via e-mail: smr1413@ictp.trieste.it by typing on the subject
line "get announcement", or via the WWW server which
will be periodically updated: http://www.ictp.trieste.it/~smr1413),
by 22 March 2002 to:
If sending an application by e-mail, please save and send file attachments in RTF format.
