The Science and Technology of Spin Transport in Nanostructures
The Abdus Salam International Centre for Theoretical Physics (ICTP, Trieste - Italy) is organizing a Conference on "The Science and Technology of Spin Transport in Nanostructures", to be held in Trieste from 19 to 22 August 2002. The Conference will be directed by Professors: Barbara Jones (IBM, Almaden, San Jose, CA, USA), Gernot Guentherodt (University of Aachen, Germany) and Dan Ralph (Cornell University, Ithaca, NY, USA). This is a time of unprecedented mixing of technology and science, theory and experiment, represented by the field of nanostructures. Samples, systems and devices are becoming so small that quantum effects are starting to predominate, increasing the importance of basic science in this area, and at the same time opening the opportunity for unique phenomena to lead to devices with new functionality. In particular the possibility of spin currents, rather than the traditional charge current, opens up new avenues of research and technology, and will be a focus of this Conference. Theoretical work is also becoming important in this area, especially as many-body effects manifest themselves (e.g., Kondo effect) in quantum engineered structures made by atomic manipulation in STM experiments, and as quantum computing raises new opportunities for the miniaturization of bits and new modes of computing. Recent marked improvements in our capability of detecting spins, of imaging on the atomic scale, of performing magnetic microscopy with element specific contrast, of imaging microscopically magnetic forces, of measuring ultrafast magnetization dynamics, and other advances have also increased experimental feasibilities in this area and further fuelled progress. The focus on spin transport, rather than traditional charge transport, and on the mix of theory and experiment, science and technology will make this Conference both timely and unlike many of the usual workshops and conferences in the nanoscience area. Besides covering an exciting topic, it will also provide an important opportunity for the gathering of scientists, for information exchange, for younger scientists to learn about the field, for presentation and discussion of forefront results, and for assessment of the field. The Conference will cover the following topics:
For all these topics, we will cover not only the basic science issues, but also the advances in sample preparation and patterning techniques, detection schemes, and technological applications. The latter will include application to future magnetic heads and disks, spin transistors, and other active spintronics device applications. The Conference will feature longer tutorial talks as openers for the topical sessions. The Conference is open to research workers from all countries that are members of the United Nations, UNESCO or IAEA. The main purpose of the Centre is to help researchers from developing countries within a framework of international cooperation. However, students and post-doctoral scientists from developed countries are also welcome to attend. As the Conference will be conducted in English, participants should have an adequate working knowledge of that language. As a rule, travel and subsistence expenses of the participants are borne by the home institutions. However, some funds are available which permit the Centre to grant a subsistence allowance to a limited number of people from developing countries who will be selected by the Organizers. As scarcity of funds allows travel to be granted only in a few exceptional cases, every effort should be made by candidates to secure support for their fares by their home country. Such financial support is available only to those attending the entire Conference. There is no registration fee for attending the Conference. The closing date for receipt of requests for participation was 30 April 2002. The completed request for participation form (also obtainable via e-mail smr1422@ictp.trieste.it and by using as subject line "get announcement", or via WWW server http://www.ictp.trieste.it/) should be sent to: Conference on the Science and Technology of Spin Transport in Nanostructures (c/o Ms. E.
