COLLEGE ON BIOPHYSICS: FROM MOLECULAR GENETICS TO STRUCTURAL BIOLOGY 1 - 12 October 2001 Miramare - Trieste, Italy Co-sponsored by: The International Centre for Genetic Engineering and Biotechnology (ICGEB), Scuola Internazionale di Studi Avanzati (SISSA), and Conselho Nacional de Desenvolvimento Cientifico e Tecnologico (CNPq), Brazil The Abdus Salam International Centre for Theoretical Physics (ICTP), the International Centre for Genetic Engineering and Biotechnology (ICGEB) and the Scuola Internazionale di Studi Avanzati (SISSA) are organizing a College on the Structure of Biomolecules from Monday 1 to Friday 12 October 2001. The College will be directed by Professors Paolo Carloni from the Scuola di Studi Avanzati, SISSA, Doriano Lamba from the Area di Ricerca, Albert J. Libchaber from the Center for Studies in Physics and Biology, the Rockefeller University and Sandor Pongor from the ICGEB. The Local Organizer will be Professor Julian Chela-Flores from the ICTP and the Instituto de Estudios Avanzados, Caracas, Venezuela. PURPOSE AND NATURE The College will focus on theoretical and experimental approaches recently developed for the understanding of information and structure in biology. Special emphasis will be given to genome sequences search, comparative genomics, gene expression with insights into gene function, correlation between gene expression and protein pathways, techniques to measure mRNA, protein expression, structure in biology, different spectroscopic techniques such as nuclear magnetic resonance applied to structural biology, X-ray diffraction, protein crystallization and synchrotron radiation. These techniques will be applied to biomolecules, including proteins and nucleic acids. Attention will be paid to molecular dynamics, modelling and databases. PARTICIPATION The College is addressed to students and scientists with an interdisciplinary background in physics, chemistry and biology, or to those intending to enter research in molecular biophysics from other fields. A working background in quantum mechanics, molecular biochemistry and experimental methods in biophysics is recommended. A poster session will also be organized and all participants are warmly encouraged to contribute. The College is open to research workers from all countries that are members of the United Nations, IAEA or UNESCO. Although one of the main purposes of the Abdus Salam ICTP is to help research workers from developing countries, graduate students and post-doctoral scientists from developed countries will also be welcome to attend. Participants should preferably have completed several years of study and research after a first degree. As the College will be conducted in English, participants should have an adequate working knowledge of that language. As a rule, travel and subsistence expenses of the participants should be covered by the home institutions. However, limited funds are available for some scientists from developing countries, to be selected by the organizers. Such financial support is available only to those who attend the entire activity. As scarcity of funds allows travel assistance to be granted only in few exceptional cases, every effort should be made by candidates to secure support for their fare (or at least half-fare) from their home country. There is no registration fee for attending the College. The closing date for requesting participation with financial support is 15 March 2001. Candidates not requesting financial support may apply up to 30 April 2001. Those wishing to participate should complete and return the "Request for Participation" form, to be found at the back of Bulletin No. 1 (also obtainable via e-mail: smr1329@ictp.trieste.it, using as subject "get announcement", or via WWW Server: http//www.ictp.trieste.it/) to: the Abdus Salam International Centre for Theoretical Physics College on Biophysics - ref. smr. 1329 (c/o Ms. Marina de Comelli) Strada Costiera 11 I-34014 Trieste, Italy If sending an application by e-mail, please save and send file attachments in RTF format. The decision of the Organizers will be communicated to all candidate as soon as possible thereafter.
