School on ³Exploring the Atmosphere by Remote Sensing Techniques² 18 October - 5 November 1999 Miramare, Trieste, Italy The Abdus Salam International Centre for Theoretical Physics (Abdus Salam ICTP) is organizing a School on "Exploring the Atmosphere by Remote Sensing Techniques", to be held from 18 October to 5 November 1999, in Trieste, Italy. The directors for this activity will be Rodolfo Guzzi (ISAO/CNR Bologna, Italy), Giorgio Giovanelli (ISAO/CNR Bologna, Italy) and Klaus Pfeilsticker (Institut für Umweltphysik, Heidelberg, Germany). The Local organizer will be Giuseppe Furlan (University of Trieste and ICTP). The School intends to give state-of-the-art knowledge of a rapidly expanding field linked to new ground based instruments and spectral aircrafts and satellites working in the uv-ir spectral range. The first part of the School will concentrate on giving a general description of the subject matter while the second one will examine a few case studies. The activity programme will be as follows: Basic Topics € Atmospheric Optics € An overview of the Spectroscopy Applied to the Atmosphere, Instruments and Methods € Platforms and Instruments Advanced Topics € Radiative Transfer Through the Atmosphere € Line Parameter Studies € Applications Models € Observations € Space-borne Observations: Case Studies € Comparison between Models and Observations Laboratory and field exercises will take place in the Bologna Research Area. Practical Sessions will be organized to show the use of sample numerical models. The School will last a total of 3 weeks. The main part of the activity will take place at the ICTP. Participants will then have the possibility of spending a few days at the CNR Laboratories at the ISAO (Institute for the Study of Atmospheric and Oceanic Sciences) located in the Bologna Research Area. The School will be given on a graduate and postgraduate level intended for M.Sc and PhD researchers working on the field of Remote Sensing. The School will offer researchers the possibility of strengthening their theoretical background in the physical mechanisms of Atmospheric Remote Sensing and related measurements. The activity is open to scientists from all member countries of the United Nations, UNESCO or IAEA. Although the main purpose of the Abdus Salam ICTP is to help researchers from developing countries through a programme based on international co-operation, students and post-doctoral scientists from developed countries are also welcome to attend. The activity will be conducted in English. Limited funding (including travel grants) for participation in the School is available, mostly for applicants from developing countries. It is stressed that participants whose travel expenses are paid by the Abdus Salam ICTP are required to attend the entire activity. No registration fee is required to attend this activity. The deadline for submitting requests for participation is 15 July 1999. The "Request for Participation" form, to be found at the back of the Bulletin (also obtainable via e-mail: smr1151@ictp.trieste.it, and by typing on the subject line "get announcement" or via the WWW:http://www.ictp.trieste.it/) should be completed, signed and mailed to: Abdus Salam ICTP School on "Exploring the Atmosphere by Remote Sensing Techniques Attn.: Ms Lisa Iannitti P.O.
