WORKSHOP ON "MODELLING REAL SYSTEMS: A HANDS-ON FIRST ENCOUNTER WITH INDUSTRIAL MATHEMATICS 27 September - 22 October 1999 A Workshop on "Modelling Real Systems: A hands-on first encounter with Industrial Mathematics will be held at The Abdus Salam International Centre for Theoretical Physics (ICTP), Trieste, from 27 September - 22 October 1999. This Bulletin contains the request for participation form and preliminary information. DIRECTORS: Helmut Neunzert (Kaiserslautern, Germany) Heinz W. Engl (Linz, Austria) LOCAL ORGANIZER: Matteo Marsili (INFM & ICTP, Trieste, Italy). I. PURPOSE AND NATURE Industrial mathematics is not a new discipline of mathematics, but it is another view on mathematics: It considers mathematics as a technology to solve industrial problems. It is therefore problem driven instead of method driven. The real life problems from industry or commerce, that provide the drive, are originally formulated in a non-mathematical language. Industrial Mathematics involves transforming these problems into mathematical descriptions (mathematical modelling); and solving or simulating these models on a computer (scientific computing). Adequate modelling and efficient simulations needed to solve a problem, require the tools of modern mathematics, both analytic and numerical. The workshop will provide an encounter with this new world of mathematics: Nine real world problems will be presented in their original, non-mathematical forms, and the participants will work in small groups on these problems. To enable the students to do this modelling, in the first week, there will be plenary lectures on mathematical topics that will be needed during the course of modelling and solving these problems. From the second week on, the participants will work in small groups first on modelling these problems, i.e., transforming them into mathematical language, and later on also on designing solution methods and, if appropriate, also computer algorithms. In this process, the participants will be guided (by a supervisor, but they will be kept on a ²long leash² in order to challenge their own creativity. Since presenting solutions of an industrial problem both in mathematical and non-mathematical terms is an integral and very important part of industrial mathematics, participants will also be asked to write a report about their work and also give an oral presentation during the last week of the course. In the following, we list problem areas and corresponding mathematical topics (which will be presented in the first week, but about which the participants in the respective group should at least have some basic knowledge): Problem Area Mathematical Area Group Leader Crystallization of Polymers Stochastics V. Capasso, Milano Prediction of Economic Data Stochastic Time Series Analysis M. Deistler, Vienna Inverse Problems Linear Functional Analysis H. Engl, Linz Free Boundaries & Phase Transitions Partial Differential Equations A. Fitt, Southampton Glass Forming Processes PDE's and Integral Equations R. Praetzel-Wolters, Kaiserslauern Optimal Route Planning Discrete Optimization F. Rendl, Klagenfurt Computer Vision Projective Geometry G. Sparr, Lund, Sweden Necessary pre-knowledge of the participants: The participants should have a proper mathematical education at least at a masterıs level. Especially, they should have knowledge of at least two of the mathematical areas mentioned above. Also, computer experience is absolutely necessary. The program is especially designed for lecturers who wish to introduce the field of Industrial Mathematics at their respective universities. - 2 - II. PARTICIPATION Scientists and students from all countries that are members of the UN, UNESCO or IAEA can attend the College. The main purpose of the Centre is to help research workers from developing countries through a programme of training activities within a framework of international cooperation. However, students and post-doctoral scientists from developed countries are also welcome to attend. As the College will be conducted in English, participants should have an adequate working knowledge of that language. As a rule, travel and subsistence expenses of the participants are borne by the home institutions. However, limited funds are available for some participants from developing countries, who will be selected by the Organizers. Such financial support is available only to those who attend the entire activity. As scarcity of funds allows travel to be granted only in a few exceptional cases, every effort should be made by candidates to secure support for their fares (or at least half-fare) from their home country. There is no registration fee to attend the College. Deadline for the RECEIPT of request for participation form: 30 May 1999 Candidates should complete and sign the attached "Request for Participation" form (also obtainable via e-mail: smr1170@ictp.trieste.it, using as subject "get bulletin", or via WWW Server: http://www.ictp.trieste.it/), and send it to: Workshop on "Modelling Real Systems: A hands-on first encounter with Industrial Mathematics" The Abdus Salam International Centre for Theoretical Physics P.O.
