WINTER COLLEGE ON OPTICS AND PHOTONICS 7 - 25 February 2000 (Miramare - Trieste, Italy) The Abdus Salam International Centre for Theoretical Physics (ICTP), in collaboration with the International Commisson of Optics (ICO) and the Optical Society of America (OSA), will organize a Winter College on Optics and Photonics. The College will take place from 7 to 25 February 2000 and will be directed by Professors A.T. Friberg (Royal Institute of Technology, Stockholm, Sweden), A. Ghatak (Indian Institute of Technology, New Delhi, India), F. Gori (Università Roma Tre, Rome, Italy) and G.T. Sincerbox (Optical Sciences Center, University of Arizona, Tucson, U.S.A.). Prof. G. Denardo (ICTP and University of Trieste, Italy) is the Local Organizer. The College aims at exposing the participants to the rapidly growing fields of modern optics, photonics and optoelectronics. The lectures will cover the basic principles and theoretical aspects of optical physics and instrumentation, as well as deal with contemporary applications, e.g., in optical storage, guided-wave technology, new types of lasers, and miniature optics. Demonstrations and/or "hands-on" laboratory and internet activities will be organized. MAIN TOPICS Fiber Optics: principles, components, amplifiers Micro-Optics and nanostructures New lasers: methods, devices, applications Optical and quantum physics: polarization, coherence, propagation Optical storage and display technologies Geometrical optics and optical design The College is organized in collaboration with the ICS - UNIDO, for the part relevant to Optical design and Optimization. An internal LAMP (Laser, Atomic and Molecular Physics) Conference will be organized so as to give all participants the opportunity to present a 20 minute seminar. Participants who intend to deliver a seminar will be expected to come to ICTP prepared with all the material needed for their talk. The College is open to scientists from all countries of the world that are members of the UN, UNESCO or IAEA. The main purpose of the Centre is to help research workers from developing countries through a programme of training activities within a framework of international cooperation. However, students and post-doctoral scientists from developed countries are also welcome to attend. As the College will be conducted in English, participants should have an adequate working knowledge of that language. As a rule, travel and subsistence expenses of the participants are borne by the home institutions. However, limited funds are available for some participants from developing countries, who will be selected by the Organizers. Such financial support is available only to those who attend the entire activity. As scarcity of funds allows travel to be granted only in a few exceptional cases, every effort should be made by candidates to secure support for their fares (or at least half-fare) from their home country. There is no registration fee to attend the College. Those wishing to participate should complete and return the Request for Participation form, to be found at the back of Bulletin No. 1 (also obtainable via e-mail: smr1218@ictp.trieste.it, by typing on the subject line: get index, or via WWW server: http://www.ictp.trieste.it/), before 31 October, 1999, to the following address: the Abdus Salam International Centre for Theoretical Physics Winter College on Optics and Photonics (c/o Ms. V.
