SYMPOSIUM ON SYNCHRONIZATION OF CHAOTIC SYSTEMS 3 - 5 July 2000 (Miramare-Trieste, Italy) DIRECTORS: T. Carroll - Naval Research Laboratory, Washington DC, U.S.A. L. Pecora - Naval Research Laboratory, Washington DC, U.S.A. J.L. Hudson - University of Virginia, Charlottesville, VA, USA LOCAL ORGANIZER: Hilda A. Cerdeira - Condensed Matter Group Synchronization of coupled non-linear systems is ubiquitous in nature. It has been observed in a variety of systems such as neuronal networks, groups of fireflies, coupled arrays of Josephson junctions and chemical reactors. But the purpose of this synchronization is still uncertain. These systems show spontaneous synchronization, but it is not yet clear why and how this happens. Very few experiments have been done, although there is already enough evidence of interesting results, due to the violation of the law of large numbers. Therefore, attracting the attention of the experimentalists is one of the aims of the present symposium. The study of synchronization of chaotic systems for communications, largely motivated by the work of Pecora and Carroll in the early 90's, raised hopes for a new system in secure communications. The objective of this meeting is to provide a forum for a critical cross-disciplinary review of the most recent advances. Some of the subjects to be covered during the conference are: - basic research in synchronized chaos - generalized and phase synchronization - synchronizing delay systems - applications of synchronized chaos in engineering, chemistry and biology - synchronization of arrays of chaotic systems and patterns in spatiotemporal systems The Symposium, which is co-sponsored by the US Office of Naval Research and ONRIFO (office of Naval Research International Field Office, Europe), will consist of programmed talks and discussions focused on a selected topic. Tentative list of speakers: - H. Abarbanel - U.S.A. M. Ogorzalek - Poland V. Afraimovich - Mexico A. Oppenheim - U.S.A. T. Arecchi - Italy K. Pyragas - Lithuania M. Barahona - U.S.A. M. Rabinovich - Russia H. Fujisaka - Japan R. Roy - U.S.A. Hu Gang - China N. Rulkov - U.S.A. M. Hasler - Switzerland W. Schwartz - Germany * K. Kaneko - Japan H. Sompolinsky - Israel P. Kennedy - Ireland K. Wiesenfeld - U.S.A. * J. Kurths - Germany D. Zanette - Argentina A. Mikhailov - Germany * to be confirmed Scientists from all countries that are members of the United Nations, UNESCO or IAEA can attend the Symposium. The main purpose of the Centre is to help research workers from developing countries, within a framework of international cooperation. However, scientists from developed countries are most welcome to attend. The working language of the Symposium will be English. As a rule, travel and subsistence expenses of the participants are borne by the home institutions. However, some funds may become available which permit the Centre to grant a subsistence allowance to a limited number of people from developing countries who will be selected by the Organizers. As scarcity of funds allows travel to be granted only in a few exceptional cases, every effort should be made by candidates to secure support for their fares (or at least partial fare) from their home country. Scientists from developed countries are welcome to join but at their own cost. There is no registration fee for attending the Symposium. The closing date for requesting participation is 20 February 2000. All those interested in participating should send a curriculum vitae either by e.mail to SMR1229@ictp.trieste.it or by mail to the following address :- Symposium on Synchronization of Chaotic Systems The Abdus Salam International Centre for Theoretical Physics P.O.
