SCHOOL ON THE MATHEMATICS OF ECONOMICS 21 August - 2 September 2000 Miramare - Trieste, Italy Co-sponsored by KFAS (Kuwait Foundation for the Advancement of Sciences) The Abdus Salam International Centre for Theoretical Physics is organizing a School on the Mathematics of Economics, from 21 August to 2 September 2000. The School is directed by Professors M. Boldrin (University of Minnesota, Minneapolis), A. Rustichini (Boston University) and J.A. Scheinkman (Princeton University). M. Marsili (INFM-SISSA) is the Local Organizer. PURPOSE AND NATURE Recent developments in various sub-fields of economic theory, in particular in evolutionary game theory, adaptive learning and the microeconomic theory of financial markets, suggest the possibility of new and interesting advances in economics. The purposes of the School are: 1. To present a quick, but advanced introduction to the main ideas and techniques in evolutionary game theory and adaptive learning. 2. To present an introduction to the theory of financial markets. 3. To provide the opportunity for an overview of some of the recent research in these three fields. The first nine days of the School will be devoted to three sets of lectures, on: - EVOLUTIONARY GAME THEORY - ADAPTIVE LEARNING - THEORY OF FINANCIAL MARKETS The last three days will be devoted to a CONFERENCE on the three topics of the lectures. Contributed papers are welcome. PARTICIPATION The School is open to scientists from all countries that are members of the UN, UNESCO or IAEA. Although the main purpose of the Abdus Salam ICTP is to help researchers from developing countries through a programme based on international cooperation, students and post-doctoral scientists from developed countries are also welcome to attend. As the School will be conducted in English, participants should have an adequate working knowledge of that language. As a rule, travel and subsistence expenses of the participants should be covered by the home institutions. However, limited funds are available for participants from developing countries who will be selected by the Organizers. Such financial support is available only to those who attend the entire activity. As scarcity of funds allows travel to be granted only in a few exceptional cases, every effort should be made by candidates to secure support for their fares (or at least half-fare) from their home country. There is no registration fee for attending the School. The closing date for requesting participation is 15 May 2000. Candidates should complete and sign the request for participation form, to be found herewith (also obtainable via e-mail: smr1235@ictp.trieste.it, by typing on the subject line "get announcement", or via WWW server: http://www.ictp.trieste.it/), and return it to: "School on the Mathematics of Economics" c/o Patrizia Passarella The Abdus Salam International Centre for Theoretical Physics Strada Costiera 11 34014 Trieste, Italy If sending an application by e-mail, please save and send file attachments in RTF format.
