SCHOOL ON SYNCHROTRON RADIATION 6 November - 8 December 2000 Miramare - Trieste, Italy The Abdus Salam International Centre for Theoretical Physics (ICTP), with the co-sponsorship of the Sincrotrone Trieste and the Societ Italiana di Luce di Sincrotrone [SILS], and supported in part by the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs; will organise the "School on Synchrotron Radiation", to be held in Trieste from 6 November to 8 December 2000. The School will be directed by Professors: M. Altarelli (ICTP and Sincrotrone Trieste); A. Craievich (Universidade de Sao Paulo); C. S. Fadley (LBL, Berkeley) and H. Wiedemann (SSRL, Stanford). The use of Synchrotron Radiation (SR) for research in science and technology has grown enormously in the past two decades, so that more than 5,000 scientists, in Europe alone, now make regular use of SR in their work. Worldwide capacity for research with SR has grown from almost zero in 1970 to the order of 2 million beamline hours per year. In the developing countries, at least seven full-scale storage rings for SR are in operation or expected to be commissioned within a few years. In addition, research with SR is truly international, with many scientists making use of facilities in other countries to complement work in their home laboratories. The aim of the School is to cover all aspects of SR, from machine physics, insertion devices and beamline design, to actual applications of SR. Emphasis will also be placed on practical training in vacuum technology and instrumentation, and the use of common experimental techniques. Present developments deal with the polarization tunability and the abundance of coherent X-rays delivered by the undulators implemented in the machines of the third generation. Industrial and environmental applications will also be discussed during this activity. Visits to the Trieste synchrotron radiation laboratory, Elettra, will be organised during the School. Due to the strong momentum gained by the proposal to transfer a Synchrotron Radiation Source to the Middle East (the SESAME Project), the first week of the School (6 - 10 November 2000), will be dedicated to introductory lectures for participants <underline>from this region only.</underline> Therefore, students from Armenia, Cyprus, Egypt, Greece, Islamic Republic of Iran, Israel, Jordan, Morocco, Oman, Palestinian National Authority, Turkey and Republic of Yemen are strongly encouraged to apply. The School will consist of a 5-day working week with 3 morning lectures per day. The afternoons will be dedicated to exercises and data handling sessions on personal computers. The lectures will include: Accelerator Physics and SR Sources, Beamline and Monochromator Design, Application of SR to Physics, Chemistry, Materials Science, Surface Science & Engineering, Geophysics, Biophysics and Environment. Topics will be scheduled as follows: 6 - 10 November: Introductory Lectures 13 - 16 November: Machine Physics 17 - 22 November: Instrumentation 23 - 28 November: Diffraction-based techniques 29 November - 4 December: Photoemission 5 - 8 December: Absorption Spectroscopy Scientists and physicists from all countries that are members of the UN, UNESCO or IAEA can attend the School. The main purpose of the Centre is to help research workers from developing countries through a programme of training activities within a framework of international cooperation. However, students and post-doctoral scientists from developed countries are also welcome to attend. As the School will be conducted in English, participants should have an adequate working knowledge of that language. <underline>Logistics limit the number of participants to 75-80. </underline> As a rule, travel and subsistence expenses of the participants should be borne by the home institutions. However, limited funds are available for some applicants from developing countries, to be selected by the organizers. As scarcity of funds allows travel to be granted only in a few exceptional cases, every effort should be made by candidates to secure support for their fare (or at least half-fare) from their home country. The closing date for receipt of requests for participation is 12 June 2000. There is no registration fee for attending the School. Information on the School can be found on the Web server of the ICTP, http://www.ictp.trieste.it/ Candidates should complete and sign the "Request for Participation" form, to be found at the back of the Bulletin (also obtainable via e-mail smr1270@ictp.trieste.it and by using as subject line "get Announcement", or via the ICTP Web server) and post it to: the Abdus Salam International Centre for Theoretical Physics School on Synchrotron Radiation (c/o Ms. E.
