Thank you for your interest on the ICTP 1999 WEB ENABLING Workshop. Unfortunately, we can not accept further (filled and signed) Application forms (Deadline was 30 July 1999). But following the main purpose of The Abdus Salam ICTP, Trieste, to help research workers from developing countries within a framework of international cooperation, we shall made an attempt to keep you informed in real-time about our Workshop. ----------------------------------------------------------------------- We invite you to follow the ICTP 1999 WEB ENABLING Workshop On-line! Instructions will shortly be given at: http://www.ictp.trieste.it/~its You can retrieve these Web pages by e-mail To: www4mail@wm.ictp.trieste.it Subject: (leave it empty) and write in the body of the message: send http://www.ictp.trieste.it/~its or simply http://www.ictp.trieste.it/~its (in the second case you will receive the HTML page as attachment). ----------------------------------------------------------------------- * * * WORKSHOP ON WEB ENABLING: TECHNOLOGIES & AUTHORING TOOLS 8 - 19 November 1999 Miramare - Trieste, Italy The Abdus Salam International Centre for Theoretical Physics, Trieste, Italy, in collaboration with the International Institute of Theoretical and Applied Physics (IITAP), Iowa, USA, is organizing a Workshop on "Web Enabling: Technologies & Authoring Tools" to be held from 8 - 19 November 1999. The local Organizers are Dr. G. Pastore (Univ. di Trieste, Italy) and Dr. E. Canessa (ICTP, Trieste, Italy). INTRODUCTION The growth of the Internet in the Universities in developing countries has to face two problems: * limited bandwidth of available telecommunication lines, causing line congestion and making access exceedingly slow, often beyond the limits of usability; * insufficient computer literacy of the academic community, with the consequent insufficient understanding of the potential of the network as a tool for spreading information (contrasted with its use for accessing information generated elsewhere). Both problems reduce drastically the effectiveness of Internet access as a tool to overcome scientific isolation. Moreover, emphasizing access with respect to diffusion of information as the only purpose of the Internet reduces its usefulness for national development: therefore, it would be important that this misconception is avoided in Universities. The staff of the University Computer Centers, Computer Science Departments, and Physics Departments, who normally are the ones building Internet access in the Universities, are the focal point of the academic user community with respect to the use of the network. PURPOSE The workshop aims at these basic objectives: * to allow the system administrators to familiarize with the most advanced techniques for optimizing the use of bandwidth; * to allow them to become familiar with the basic tools to put information on the Web, selected among those most relevant to the kind of materials that scientists need to distribute (scientific papers, scientific data, courseware ...). The purpose is to allow them to act mainly as teachers, but also as consultants, to their colleagues and students; * to introduce them to some of the recent developments in standards and services. PROGRAMME The workshop will consist of: 1. Technicalities: Web Servers/Software, Design and Construction, Redirectors, Proxy/caching, Statistical Tools and User Tracking, Databases and the Web. 2. Applications: Authoring Tools/Page design tools/Web Site tools, CGI's, Tools for multi-lingual Web pages, Collaborative and Learning Environments/Chat Rooms/Web Conferencing, Didactic Web Presentations, Scientific Electronic Publishing: Tools, Design. Other Information: A very large proportion of the workshop will consist of laboratory sessions. Linux will be used as primary O.S. Case studies by participants are welcome. Trieste, 31 July 1999 -oOo-
