SECOND WORKSHOP ON FUSION RELATED PHYSICS AND
ENGINEERING IN SMALL DEVICES
20-22 October 1999
Miramare - Trieste, Italy
The Abdus Salam International Centre for Theoretical Physics (ICTP)
will organise the "Second Workshop on Fusion Related Physics and Engineering in
Small Devices", to be held in Trieste from 20 - 22 October 1999. The
Workshop will be directed by Professors Alan Wootton (Lawrence Livermore
National Laboratory) and Reza Amrollahi (K.N. Toosi University of
Technology).
PURPOSE AND NATURE
Given the recent direction and re-evaluation of large scale magnetic
fusion devices such as the International Thermonuclear Experimental Reactor
(ITER), new emphasis is now placed on contributions to Plasma and Fusion
Science from small to medium devices. Well defined and directed research
programs on small devices are capable of significant contributions to the
World Fusion Program. This topical workshop is intended to focus on the
exchange of ideas and experiences to promote cooperation and collaboration
between the largest established programs and smaller programs, specifically
those from developing countries.
Hence, the main objectives will be to discuss and review Plasma and
Fusion Physics and Engineering in small devices and the results obtained in
them, especially as they pertain to the World Fusion Program; promote
cooperation and collaboration between developed and developing country
Plasma and Fusion Science programs; discuss possible directions and
collaborations for future work.
PROGRAMME
The Workshop will consist of oral presentations, including reviews of
experimental work from individual groups; discussion sessions concentrating
on the relevance and importance of the results to larger machines and the
World Fusion Program; discussion sessions to consider possible
collaborative programs and future work. The tone of the workshop will be
informal and participation will be limited to promote group discussion and
exchange of ideas and engineering experience.
Presentations will concern, in particular, the following topics:
* Physics of Turbulence and Transport * Tokamak Disruptions
* Diagnostic and Data Analysis Development * Engineering Concepts
PARTICIPATION
This Workshop is intended for experimental groups that are involved in
relevant research on small devices.
The Workshop is open to scientists from all countries that are members
of the UN, UNESCO or IAEA. Although one of the main purposes of ICTP is to
help research workers from developing countries, graduate students and
post-doctoral scientists from developed countries will also be welcome to
attend. As the Workshop will be conducted in English, participants should
have an adequate working knowledge of that language.
As a rule, travel and subsistence expenses of the participants should
be borne by the home institutions. However, limited funds are available
for some people from developing countries to be selected by the organisers.
As scarcity of funds allows travel to be granted only in a few exceptional
cases, every effort should be made by candidates to secure support for
their fares (or at least half-fare) from their home country. It is
stressed that participants whose travel expenses are paid by the ICTP are
required to attend the entire activity.
There is no registration fee for attending the Workshop. The closing
date for requesting participation is 31 MAY 1999.
Candidates should complete and sign the "Request for Participation"
form to be found below and return it within the deadlines indicated above
to the following address:
