Abstract: Viable models of modified gravity designed to produce cosmic acceleration at the current epoch, closely mimic the LCDM (cosmological constant) model at the level of background cosmology. However, this degeneracy is generically broken at the level of linear perturbations, where the modifications induce a peculiar scale-dependent pattern. The differences in the prediction for the growth of large scale structure can be sufficiently large to be detected/constrained with upcoming and future surveys. In the first part of the seminar I will present a study of how scalar perturbations evolve in the class of f(R) theories. In the second part I will introduce a parametrization to describe general modifications in the growth pattern and will explore the potential of upcoming surveys to detect/constrain departures from the growth of structure expected in LCDM.
