Algebraic and geometric intersection numbers for free groups

We shall discuss Scott-Swarup intersection number for the splittings of a free group of rank n and the geometric intersection number for the embedded spheres in a 3-manifold with fundamental group a free group of rank n. We shall show that these intersection numbers coincide.
