The 10th edition of the School of Nuclear Knowledge Management (NKM School) is jointly organized by The Abdus Salam International Centre for Theoretical Physics (ICTP) and the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA). On top of recognizing a decade of successful cooperation between the IAEA the ICTP, 2014 will also mark ICTP’s 50th anniversary. 
 

PURPOSE - The School is a certificate course aiming to provide specialized education and training on development and implementation of knowledge management programmes in nuclear science and technology organizations. 
 

FOCUS - The School focuses on methodologies and practices, and explores various dimensions of NKM such as processes and tools, challenges and benefits, culture influence, relationship with human resource development, information technology for knowledge preservation and sharing, etc. Learning is supplemented with real life examples, good practices and lessons learned from NKM programmes in different types of nuclear organizations. The aim is to encourage ‘forward thinking’ and to make theory and insights directly applicable in the workplace. 

 

TOPICS - The main topics of the School are: 

 

• Nuclear Knowledge and Knowledge Management Fundamentals; 

• Developing Policies and Strategies in Managing Nuclear Knowledge; 

• Managing Nuclear Information Resources; 

• Human Resources Development, Risk of Knowledge Loss and Knowledge Transfer; 

• Practical Guidance and Best practices on NKM. 

 

LOCATION - The School will be taking place in Trieste, Italy at the ICTP premises. 

 

DURATION - 25th to 29th August 2014. 

 

DELIVERY METHODS – The School starts before going to Trieste, with a pre-training done via e-learning. This pre-training introduces applicants to the fundamentals of NKM, and ensures a common understanding of the basics, allowing a more efficient and valuable interaction with peers and lecturers during the face-to-face in-class training that follows. 

Once in ICTP, topics are introduced through presentations delivered by recognized experts, followed by case studies, practical and breakout sessions where the participants will have the opportunity to discuss issues and solutions. An NKM group project is also developed over the week. 

 

WHO CAN PARTICIPATE - The invitation to the School is extended to young professionals from the nuclear field that have - or may in the near future have – a lead role in managing nuclear knowledge. Experts and scientists from countries that are members of the UN, UNESCO or IAEA may attend. Although the main purpose of the Centre is to help researchers from developing countries through a programme of training activities within a framework of international co-operation, a limited number of participants from developed countries are also welcome. Due to organizational reasons, the total number of participants is limited. The School will be conducted in English therefore participants must have adequate language knowledge. 

 

SELECTION PROCEDURE - The selection procedure has two phases. The applicants are first screened based on their qualification, skills, abilities and experience. The pre-selected group will then undertake the online pre-training course (on an e-learning platform) and a test. The results from the test will be one of the final elements considered in the final selection of participations for the School.
