When exposed to novel environments, animals may switch between curious and anxious states. The exploration behaviour is therefore highly dynamic and complex. The build-up of internal representation of the environments is coupled with exploration. In this talk, I will review recent progress on the spatial representations in the medial entorhinal cortex of rodents, and discuss on-going work on neural network models of spatial memory and the analysis of free exploration behaviour.
