Eddie Farhi was trained as a theoretical particle physicist but has also worked on astrophysics, general relativity, and the foundations of quantum mechanics. Dr. Farhi obtained his B.A. and M.A. in physics at Brandeis University in the US before getting his Ph.D. in 1978 from Harvard University under the supervision of Howard Georgi. He was then on the staff at the Stanford Linear Accelerator Center and at CERN in Geneva, Switzerland before joining MIT in 1982. At MIT, Farhi taught undergraduate courses in quantum mechanics and special relativity. At the graduate level he has taught quantum mechanics, quantum field theory, particle physics and general relativity. He won three teaching awards at MIT and in 2000, 2001, and 2002 he lectured the freshman physics course, "8.01." From 2004 until 2016, he served as Director of MIT's Center for Theoretical Physics and in 2018 he retired from his position as the Cecil and Ida Green Professor of Physics at MIT. Edward Farhi is currently Principal Scientist at Google working on quantum computation. More details on the talk will follow. The event will be livestreamed from the ICTP website. All are most welcome to attend.
