The Abdus Salam International Centre for Theoretical Physics (ICTP) is  organizing an International School on 'Geothermal Exploration', to be  held from December 7 - 12, 2015 in Trieste, Italy. The School is  co-sponsored by the International Geothermal Association (IGA) and the  International Union of Geodesy and Geophysics (IUGG). Geothermal energy  offers unique possibilities to support the sustainable progress of the  economy of Developing and Least Developed Countries (DC/LDC) through the  extensive utilization of a Renewable Energy Source. It's peculiar  characteristics make it particularly appealing as a renewable, stable,  reliable, cost-effective and environmentally benign solution for the  energy challenge of the third millennium. Exploration focuses on the  initial phase of any geothermal project, namely the identification and  assessment of resources by means of integrated geological, remote  sensing, geochemical and geophysical methods. The School aims at  providing advanced knowledge of geothermal exploration methods with  specific reference to the following topics:
  • Geothermal energy resources distribution with specific reference to geologic and tectonic framework;
  • Geological surveying methods through lectures, tutorials and case studies/histories;
  • Remote sensing methods for geothermal exploration: lectures, case histories and laboratory sessions;
  • Geochemical methods in geothermal exploration: lectures, case histories and laboratory sessions;
  • Geophysical methods in geothermal exploration; lectures, case studies and laboratory sessions.
  • Reservoir engineering and numerical modeling with laboratory sessions Geothermal power plants Economic issues related to geothermal energy exploitation
