Abstract: I will speak about endowing a toroidal crossing space with a log structure. The eventual aim is to use these log structures to construct smoothings of degenerate Fano varieties. I will assume no previous knowledge of log structures and instead develop the subject from scratch. (This is joint work in progress with Helge Ruddat.)
